Private America | 1993-94
New York Stories, curated by Richard Wasko, P.S.1 Institute of Contemporary Art, Long Island City, New York
Private America consisted of 12 video monitors arranged in a circle with benches. Each monitor acted both as an illuminating device, lighting Ecktachrome Photographs that were held in front of the screen, and as a video screen in which footage of the Vietnam War was projected into a small blank screen in the chrome. Thus the work superimposed a moving image into a still one. The title Private America alluded to the way the suburban home became the isolated vantage point to view the events of the world.
